What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

Keeping your pet healthy can feel like a full-time job, especially as your pet ages and their risk of injury or illness increases. While you can’t do anything about freak accidents, you can take as many preventative steps as possible to keep your pet out of danger.

One of the best things that you can do when you are a proud pet parent is to sign up for a pet insurance plan. There is a wide range of pet insurance providers and you can compare pet insurance coverage options online to find the best plan for your furry friend.

Pet insurance is a type of insurance that offers a layer of financial protection for pet owners. If your furry companion gets injured or falls ill and needs treatment or surgery, the veterinary bills can quickly accumulate. If ongoing treatment is required, you could end up paying thousands of dollars in medical bills.

By signing up for a pet insurance policy, you can reduce your costs at the vet. Your policy will cover some, if not most of your bills when your pet needs treatment.

Pet insurance plans vary significantly. Every provider offers a range of plans that have varying levels of coverage. The more coverage you have, the more your premium will cost and vice versa. However, a more expensive plan means you will get more help with the bills if your pet is in need.

It’s always advisable to talk to your vet before committing to one specific pet insurance plan. Your vets will be able to advise you on how much coverage you are likely to need, depending on your pet’s current health status, age, and activity levels.

So, what kinds of pet insurance are there? What are the different types of coverage that you can get?

What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

Most providers have a few different options for pet owners. Depending on your pet’s needs, you can sign up for one type of insurance or a combination of multiple types.

Here are the main types of pet insurance that most providers will offer. Note that not every provider will offer all three options so it’s important to check with each company when you’re searching for a policy.

  • Accident Coverage – as the name suggests, accident coverage will cover the costs of any treatment or surgery associated with accidents. It covers things like fractures, torn ligaments, wounds, eye trauma, poisoning, or surgery to remove an ingested object.
  • Illness Coverage – pets can get ill at any time and having illness coverage means that your bills are partially covered if your pet needs medications or surgeries. It covers things like allergies, cancer treatment, arthritis, infections, digestive issues, skin infections, and parasite infections.
  • Wellness Coverage – this isn’t included in every insurance plan but will be offered as an addition to accident and illness coverage. It covers things like pet supplements, vaccinations, teeth cleaning, and flea or tick treatments.
